Charger character history
By Adam Maag
The jettisoned stasis pod crashed into the Rocky Mountains with a fantastic explosion of earth and plant-life. The antenna popped up, and the scan was made. What came out of the pod was a hoofed mammal, about seven from head to toe, with a 16-point set of antlers that easily stretched four feet.
Charger walked out of the device having no clue what it was…or, for that matter, what he was. He knew that he was a machine. A collection of gears and wires. But he felt like he belonged here: like this was his home. He was connected to the land. He decided to sit and contemplate on his purpose and why he might be here.
Not long after that he heard a long chilling howl. DANGER!... RUN!... NOW!!!... He didn't know why he thought his life was at stake, he just knew that something was wrong. He ran. Then he saw it. A growling beast with gnashing teeth. Then another, to his left and two more behind him. Then one jumped and sank his teeth into Chargers calf. With a high pitched cry Charger sent the wolf flying back 15 feet. The other wolves stopped dead in their tracks and whimpered. As Charger turned, the other wolves ran. He came up on the corpse ,and saw that the wolf's skull was smashed in. Though the wolf was the antagonist, Charger knew that he was in the wrong. What had just occurred was part of a natural process to which he was alien. This revelation killed him inside, as he so much wanted to be part of this world.
Many times the sun passed over the horizon. He met others of the species from which he was copied. And as the trees changed color, he became flooded with emotion. The first time he was challenged by a male, he smashed the other male's antlers. After that, he had the largest harem and life was good.
One summer it was very hot and dry. The lightning struck and the dry vegetation burst into flame. He had seen fires before, but not at this scale. Fire ravaged the mountaintops for days. Then one afternoon he was looking onto a valley, where he saw a large herd with many young calves trapped by the fire. Becoming very angry, he wished that he could do something. It had been a hard winter and many elk had died. Then something turned on inside of him, and he made the rains come and, quenched the fire. So many summers passed like that, with Charger controlling the weather, and living as naturally as possible.
Then one day he saw a large shining piece of metal crossed the horizon. Curious, he followed it. When he came up to where the object touched the ground he noticed creatures like him came out of it. After all these seasons will he finally know where he came from, and why he was sent to live on this planet. One thing for sure: he knew his life would never be the same.
